When people buy flowers or plants to decorate their homes and gardens, sometimes they come with an unexpected guest. Dr Silviu Petrovan, a frog expert at the University of Cambridge, was recently invited to a flower shop in Sheffield, England, to identify a frog that had been found in some roses. He discovered that the frog was from South America. Petrovan said it must have hopped into the roses while they were travelling from Colombia to the UK.
Inspired by this, Petrovan has worked with a team of researchers to find out how common it is for animals, diseases and pests from other parts of the world to arrive in Europe with flowers, and ornamental plants that people grow in their homes or gardens for their appearance or scent.
The researchers looked at records of pests found in ornamental plants entering the Netherlands between 2017 and 2018, and the UK between 2021 and 2023. They found that, in both cases, 80% of the pests found were insects. There was also evidence of Italian wall lizards (壁蜥), geckos (蜥蜴) and snakes from mainland Europe arriving in ornamental olive tree deliveries. Insects, fungi (真菌), reptiles (爬行动物) and spiders were transported in plant deliveries as well.
This could be increasing the risk of invasive species. Based on their research, Petrovan's team suggested that there needed to be tighter rules around how ornamental plants and flowers are traded between countries. This could help to prevent harmful species making their way into new habitats. However, the team added that any new rules shouldn't make the plant trade more difficult because lots of people rely on it to make money.
34. Which of the following is mentioned as an unexpected guest in Paragraph 1?
A. A plant to decorate homes.
B. The owner of a shop.
C. An expert named Petrovan.
D. A frog from South America
由第一段内容可知"a frog that had been found in some roses."
35. Where did the Italian wall lizards (壁蜥) come from according to Paragraph 3?
A. Colombia.
B. The Netherlands.
C. Mainland Europe.
D. The UK.
由题干关键词定位到第三段内容“There was also evidence of Italian wall lizards (壁蜥), geckos (蜥蜴) and snakes from mainland Europe arriving in ornamental olive tree deliveries." 可知有证据表明,欧洲大陆的意大利壁蜥、壁虎和蛇类通过装饰性橄榄树的运输渠道入境新地区,故符合的答案选C.
36. What does the underlined word "This" in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Playing with pests.
B. Transporting plants.
C. Researching insects.
D. Damaging animal habitats.
代词一般指代上文中提到的事物,由此可定位到上一段的最后一句话 “Insects, fungi (真菌), reptiles (爬行类动物) and spiders were transported in plant deliveries as well.”
37. Why did the research team suggest making tighter rules?
A. To help people make more money.
B. To make the plant trade more difficult.
C. To improve the environment for animals.
D. To prevent harmful species invasion.
Petrovan's team suggested that there needed to be tighter rules around how ornamental plants and flowers are traded between countries. This could help to prevent harmful species making their way into new habitats."
